What's in a Name?

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out: What's in a Name?

The name we go by with our friends and family can be a very personal thing.

In a professional environment, I go by Angela Copeland. At home, I go by Angie, Angie Dawn, Sister and Aunt Angie. So often, our name reflects our role or status, whether its doctor or dad. We have an emotional tie to the names we choose to go by. It’s such a strong tie that, in fact, it can often cause internal conflict when we attempt to adjust it. Our name is our identity and part of our personal brand.

Standing out from the pack: Memphis Daily News

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out: Learning to Stand Out From the Pack.

Many people think they know what it is that makes one candidate stand out from another. Some think it’s an expensive graduate degree. Others say it’s the ability to take on loads of student debt, or being born into the right family. Although a pedigree from a good school and being in the right social circle never hurts, it usually won’t be the deciding factor between you and another candidate.

The difference boils down to something called “sticktoitiveness.” Sticktoitiveness can be observed in a person who doesn’t give up. It’s someone who sees projects through to the end. Someone who perseveres. Someone who is tenacious. This is someone who really believes in themselves and their mission.

Recycling Returns to South Main Neighborhood!

EXCITING NEWS: Recycling has returned to South Main.   And the best part is you don't have to sort anymore! All the items can go into one bin together.  Recycling downtown is now fast, easy, and convenient!

How this all got started:
Early last year, downtown Memphis residents used recycling bins that were sponsored by the City's Office of Sustainability.  Unfortunately, funding for the bins ran out and they were removed. Rather than lose them for good, a small group of downtowners including me, Sharon Leicham, and Bob Lundy worked together to come up with a plan to bring recycling back to South Main. And, the Office of Sustainability helped to connect us with the right resources to get started.

We toured the single stream facility at ReCommunity, and put together a campaign to raise awareness and funds.  Thank you to the generous donations of our friends and neighbors downtown, we were able to raise over $1,200.  Then, the Downtown Memphis Commission stood up and matched that $1,200!

The South Main Association has also jumped in to to help out.  They are now our non-profit sponsor, helping us manage the relationship with recycling pickup company, Waste Management, and recycling facility, ReCommunity.
Where we are now:
You can drop off your recycling at the bins located next to the Memphis Farmer’s Market at Front Street and G.E. Patterson.   You can recycle the following items:
  • Glass
  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic containers
  • Cans
The "single stream" bins allow you to quickly and easily throw all of your recyclables into one container.  No more sorting will be necessary.

Recycling has just gotten faster, easier, and more local thanks to generous donations by the Downtown Memphis community.  THANK YOU to everyone for all of your donations, and for spreading the word about our project.

But, to keep recycling in South Main for good, we will continue need your support.  To learn more or to make a donation to this exciting initiative, visit us at Facebook.com/SouthMainRecycles or Fundly.com/south-main-recycles

Please help us spread the word that RECYCLING IS BACK IN SOUTH MAIN!

Thank you again for your generous support!

Copeland Coaching offering web-based job hunting services

Entrepreneur Angela Copeland has launched Copeland Coaching, a career counseling and training firm that offers services including interviewing, negotiating and networking.

Copeland, who participated in the inaugural cohort of the Seed Hatchery startup accelerator in 2011, has been involved in the career coaching industry for nearly a decade. She specializes in personal branding and maximizing Web-based platforms during job searches.

“I started coaching while attending graduate school at Pepperdine University and my professors noticed that I looked for jobs differently than the other students,” Copeland said. “They began referring students and professionals to me for career coaching and I’ve continued to coach informally since then, recently turning it into a business.”

In addition to opening her firm, Copeland has released an e-book titled “Breaking the Rules and Getting the Job” that offers practical advice for job seekers.
